Adventures in Dirty Pours

I’ve been watching YouTube videos of dirty pours for a long time. And I finally got off my ass, bought some paint and ordered some liquid silicone off Amazon. My first painting was an epic fail as I didn’t thin the acrylic out enough or use nearly the amount of paint I needed to. Oh well. Lesson learned.

I ran to Michaels this morning and picked up some more paint (and some planner supplies, because, planners. Duh.) Decided to go with 7 different colors on this one. I used Liquitex Acrylic Color in Cobalt Blue, Bright Aqua Green, Primary Yellow, Bronze Yellow, Gold, Titanium White and Craft Smart Satin Acrylic Paint in Coral Reef. Each color went into a plastic Solo cup and was thinned with water to an easily pourable consistency.

The liquid silicone came from a small business called Impresa Products based out of San Francisco. It’s actually treadmill belt lubricant but it works perfectly to create cells in the paint. I can’t really say how much I used. Just a squirt in some of the cups (I didn’t add it to all of the colors.) After they were all mixed in, I slowly poured each of the colors to the white base cup, alternating each one. Then it was time to upend the cup right onto the wood. I let it sit for about a minute so all of the paint could make it’s way down to the bottom. After lifting the cup off the wood I swirled the paint to cover all of the top and sides. It’s now resting on some cups on top of an old bin cover.

I’m super happy with how this one turned out and cant wait to make more. I like using the wooden planks and pieces because it seems like you would be able to see the texture of canvas. I guess if you prime it enough it would work fine though. Eventually I’ll probably make a video. Until then you can find some of my favorites here, here, here and here.
